What SS-31 is
SS-31 is a four amino acid peptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin. That binding is structural rather than enzymatic, which distinguishes it from compounds that act on a receptor, and it is the reason the peptide localises to mitochondria at all.
