MOTS-c is unusual in being encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA. It is sixteen amino acids long and was identified in the twelve S ribosomal RNA region. Research interest centres on metabolic signalling, and it is one of the few peptides whose gene does not sit in the cell nucleus.
